What a beautiful, wonderful world this was to play in! #Repost @dual.works ・・・ project archive | spectre arts | theatre set | May 2018 This post looks back on an incredibly rewarding experience in which we were delighted to design and manufacture an immersive and interactive stage set for the awe-inspiring Spectra Arts, a performance company that draws on the diverse creativity of its mixed professional and learning-disabled community cast to devise multi-sensory theatre. We enjoyed collaborating with this dynamic group of creatives and learned how a devising theatre company develops concepts and narrative as a collaborative journey, this unfolding adventure led to an imaginative narrative which initiated our design challenge! In response we designed and fabricated an immersive and interactive set as part of a promenade performance whereby the audience travelled around three distinct environments. Each area had a specific sensory experience and included wearable collars made from flocked carpet for audience members to wear which acted like a travelling set, providing a wearable wall of colour, pattern, and texture at each location. In September 2019, Spectra commissioned Arts Journalist and Theatre Critic, Bella Todd to write a report on improving critical engagement with theatre made by artists with learning disabilities. This report is a response to a growing sense that theatre criticism is failing to keep up with the increasingly professional, interesting and artistically driven work being made by theatre companies working with artists with learning disabilities. Today we are launching both the Executive Summary and the Full Report as an invitation to theatre critics, industry influencers, performance makers and neurodiverse artists to join in a wider conversation about how we shift the status quo.
