In September 2019, Spectra commissioned Arts Journalist and Theatre Critic, Bella Todd to write a report on improving critical engagement with theatre made by artists with learning disabilities. This report is a response to a growing sense that theatre criticism is failing to keep up with the increasingly professional, interesting and artistically driven work being made by theatre companies working with artists with learning disabilities. Today we are launching both the Executive Summary and the Full Report as an invitation to theatre critics, industry influencers, performance makers and neurodiverse artists to join in a wider conversation about how we shift the status quo. 1 - How you can help us? We want to engage in a wider conversation with audiences, performance makers, critics, neurodiverse artists, venues, industry influencers and disruptors as to how theatre made by integrated theatre companies can sit amongst mainstream companies and be seen and regarded as equal to their mainstream counterparts. 2 - What does the future look like? We want our work to create a ripple effect, for our audiences to take what they’ve experienced and change the world.
